We have some great classes coming up this month! Have you seen the Lone Star quilt and Glass Houses? I love those designs and they are great projects for your arsenal! And Tammy McCorkle teaches Backbasting Applique tomorrow morning. We haven't had this class in awhile and I can tell from the signups that it was long overdue! There are a few spots available so if you have a desire to learn a faster, easier way to do needleturn applique, sign up!. This is my favorite applique technique!
The girls and I have been busy, busy, busy working on new quilt samples for my new fabric line for Benartex! It was a lot of fun to open a big, heavy box that had 187 yards of my fabric! I can't wait to show you these new quilts. If you like The Antique Quilt that is on the shop wall, you will like this new collection! We even had to corral our good friend, Pam Thorlin (remember her?) to help make one of these quilts. There is a lot of blood, sweat and ...well more blood in these quilts...I had a rotary cutting accident last week...still have all fingers but one fingernail is cut down past the quick! ouch!! Best news is--no blood on fabric! Be sure to change your rotary blades...a dull blade is a dangerous blade. It's been a long time since I did so much piecing...I'm trying some new tips (new to me) and I'm changing my mind on techniques that I have used for years. I'll write more about this later.
QUILT GUILD OF GREATER HOUSTON QUILT SHOW
In the meantime, don't forget to stop by the shop after you check out the Quilt Guild of Greater Houston Quilt Show at the Stafford Center on Friday and Saturday, May 5 & 6! Let's support our guilds whenever we can. It takes a lot of volunteers and effort to produce these wonderful quilt shows and I know the Houston Quilt Guild will appreciate your attendance. There is always lots to see and the quilts are beautiful!
We are going to demo some great products that are new to us in the shop and we will have a great fabric sale and a prize drawing! So stop by Quilter's Emporium before or after the quilt show!
Quilter's Emporium is proud to announce Kwilt Kamp, our version of a week-long summer camp for kids. We will teach color theory, sewing machine usage, and all the basics of creating a quilt top. Projects will begin with a pillowcase and advance to include a wallhanging and tote bag, and culminate with a quilt top. We have set aside the week of June 12 - 16 for kids 12 years old and older. We will offer a younger group (ages 8 - 11) our unique summer camp experience from July 10 - 14. If you know someone who might be interested in this program, please share. If you are interested in volunteering your time to expose a young person to the creative joy of sewing, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org. The cost for 5 days of fun and accomplishment, 9 am - 4 pm, will be $275/student if they provide their own machine or $325/student if we provide a machine. Kits for projects are included; students will pick their own fabrics to show off their color sense and style. Notions (scissors, seam rippers, etc.) will be provided by the student. Registration begins Saturday, March 4. Sign up before May 6 and save $25.
KWILT KAMP - This Summer!
Notes from Joey...
Mama made me a comfy new nap map and I loovvveeee it! It is very nice to lay on and it is in my favorite fabric.
The instructions for making Joey's Nap Mat are on the Benartex Blog. No applique....whatever that is!
Licks and kisses, your pal, Joey!
Janome Machine Talk with Joey
As you probably know, I am a modest dog with low mileage (I am 6 ½ years old), a trim weight (I only weigh 5 pounds), and I do have an eye (just the one) for the ladies!
Recently I have been noticing Janome's Anna Maria Horner sewing machine, also known as AMH M100, amongst all the lovely ladies at the back of the shop. She wears those lovely pink flowers and even signed her machine just for me.
Anna Maria has 100 stitches, which she says include all her favorites for making garments, patchwork, and quilt making. She has an easy needle threader, snap-on presser feet, automatic thread cutter, auto-declutch bobbin winder, and a 7 mm stitch width. She comes with a hard cover and a large extension table...not to mention needle up/down and stitch lock. That sounds like more toys than I have!
Her vital statistics (that means her measurements) – she is a mere 14.1 pounds with a work space of 6.7 by 4.3 inches. She is 15.9 inches wide and 11 inches tall and 6.9 inches in depth. Ann Maria is just the perfect size for taking to the shop so I can see her on weekends. Wow! I didn’t realize she was that much bigger than me.
She is a smooth and quiet machine and I love to hear her humming while she stitches.
She comes with a ¼ inch foot (much smaller than my paw), an automatic buttonhole foot, a blind hem foot (this works great if you have just one eye), an overedge foot, a satin stitch foot F, a zipper foot, zig-zag foot, walking foot, darning foot, and a seam ripper. Wait a minute – that is a lot of feet!! I just have four.
And you know what else? She has a 7 piece feed dog. Yeah. That is a lot of feed dogs. Who doesn’t like his chow?
So come on in and see me and the Anna Maria soon. She is the perffect size for going on our cruise next February, taking to classes, or for being your main sewing machine at home! She is in stock and MSRP is $999.00...of course our price is much lower AND Auntie Alison gives you a guide class too!
|QUILTING ANGELS CHARITY BEE|
The Quilting Angels are a fun group of ladies who meet every other month to make quilts for charity. We will have our next sewing bee on Monday, May 15 from 10:00 to 4:00. We provide the quilt kits already cut out from donated fabrics, and each person gets to choose which quilt they want to work on. There is no pressure to complete quilts by any specific time; we each work at our own pace. Each person decides if they want to take home the quilt they are working on to finish it, or leave it with me to bring back for them to work on next time.
We are currently working on quilts to donate to a battered women's shelter at the request of Bonnie McCormick, a Quilter's Emporium employee. The quilts will be donated in honor of Patricia East, the daughter of a friend of Bonnie, who was killed by her ex-husband. Patricia had been serving in the Army. The family asked for donations to battered women's shelters in lieu of flowers. It is our honor to help with this request.
Unfortunately, no one came this past Monday to help Pam Baum with machine quilting lap quilts for charity. We will try one more time, on June 19. If you are interested in helping in this way, but the dates just haven't worked out for your schedule, could you let me know? You can email Susan at email@example.com.
Quilting Angels are sew special!
MILLION PILLOWCASE CHALLENGE
I was in the shop this afternoon and the drawer at QE is more than half full of pillowcases kits available to pick up and sew. For those of you who don’t know, QE keeps pillowcase kits available for anyone to pick up, take home and sew. All we ask is that the you return the completed pillowcases to QE so that we can donate them to Houston and Silverado Hospices for their patients.
The pillowcases we made during March Madness have been delivered. Both of our Hospices were thrilled to receive them. Unfortunately, none of you get the wonderful experience I do when the pillowcases are delivered. I am greeted with huge hugs and lots of thank yous. When this last batch of pillowcases were delivered, I got to enjoy watching the volunteer coordinator’s ooh's and ahh's over all the “beautiful” pillowcases. Both hospices routinely tell how much the pillowcases are appreciated.
Just this week I was talking to a friend about him putting his mother-in-law in Hospice care. He told me she was all settled in with Silverado. Out of curiosity I asked if she had received a pillowcase. His face lit up with a huge smile, “Yes she has!” I told him a little about all the wonderful people that make those pillowcases. He hugged me and told me that it really meant a lot to her and his wife to receive that pillowcase. I got the privilege of the hug but please know that it was meant for each and every one of you. Thank you for what you do!!
Save the date for Friday, September 15, and Saturday, September 16, for our 24-Hour Pillowcase Sew-A-Thon. This has become an annual event at QE in conjunction with Allpeoplequilts.com. More information will be provided as we get closer to the event. Mark those calendars and join us for the fun.
As of Wednesday, evening the National count is 715,085. With the pillowcase donations from my Relay For Life team and QE we have donated 454 pillowcases this year alone! Great job!
