Time to get on board the Greater Houston Shop Hop at the end of this month!   All nine shops will be open from 9-6, with an additional hour on Friday, 9-7.  Cruise from shop to shop, get your passport stamped, get a freepattern, buy a kit for that block (the batik fabrics all coordinate),even buy a setting kit - each shop has their own version so there are lots of choices!

The grand prize is a free ticket for TWO on our week-long cruise!!!  How fun is that?   You can bring your hubby or your best quilting buddy!  Our joint quilting cruise will take place on February 18-25, 2018 on the Liberty of the Seas sailing from Galveston.  Ports of call are Cozumel, Mexico; Falmouth, Jamaica; Georgetown, Grand Cayman Island.   All classes will be taught by the shop owners, so there will be lots of variety!  Classes are taught on the 3 at-sea days.  There will be quilting classes, contests, challenges, games, lectures, trunk shows, goodie bags, and more!  Sign up soon for the cruise.  There is a finite number of cabins available.  Send me an email if you have any questions at rcook@quiltersemporium.com

BY THE WAY - Pricing for the weeklong cruise starts at $1144 per person, based on double occupancy.  Its' a great price considering it includes your cabin, entertainment, all quilting events, meals, etc!  Check out the Quilter's Emporium website for details.

If you happen to win, your fees will be refunded to you.  All classes are included in the cruise fare, you just pay for the class kits, where necessary.  Bring your own machine or rent one of the machines that will be there for your classes.  You can sign up by calling Al Magee at 713.729.3040.

KWILT KAMP - This Summer!

Quilter's Emporium is proud to announce Kwilt Kamp, our version of a week-long summer camp for kids.  We will teach color theory, sewing machine usage, and all the basics of creating a quilt top.  Projects will begin with a pillowcase and advance to include a wallhanging and tote bag, and culminate with a quilt top.  We have set aside the week of June 12 - 16 for kids 12 years old and older.  We will offer a younger group (ages 8 - 11) our unique summer camp experience from July 10 - 14.  If you know someone who might be interested in this program, please share.  If you are interested in volunteering your time to expose a young person to the creative joy of sewing, please contact pam@quiltersemporium.com.  The cost for 5 days of fun and accomplishment, 9 am - 4 pm, will be $250/student if they provide their own machine or $295/student if we provide a machine.  Kits for projects are included; students will pick their own fabrics to show off their color sense and style.  Notions (scissors, seam rippers, etc.) will be provided by the student.  Registration begins Saturday, March 4.

 Notes from Joey...

Well one thing about spring that i like is that i can dig, dig, dig in the flower beds.  That is what Mama is doing, so i'm just helping her out.  The bad thing about spring, is that i have to get a lot of baths because I dig, dig, dig. My feeties get filthy!  You see me on the left...all soaking wet and shivering.  Then i am handsome again all toasty warm and dry.

Here is an update on the quilt pattern challenge on their blog.  "We Love Joey" didn't make it past the second cut but thank you to everyone who voted!  I was proud that we made it to the top 16 out of 50!  Not bad and it shows how much you guys like me.  I'm grateful to all of you, licks and kisses.

Mama's quilt "Big Moon" is doing really well!   We think that "Big Moon made into the final 4!   The daily contests start at noon and run for 24 hours.   The winner's pattern gets to have a "blue ribbon" on their pattern on the Benartex website.  Its just for fun!  But we'd appreciate your support!  It's very easy to join in the fun;  just comment on the blog and tell them which quilt you are voting for, during that day's challenge.  Remember it runs from noon to noon each day.  Its' a lot of fun!

It's called http://sewinlovewithfabric.blogspot.com/   Check it out and vote for your favorite quilt patterns!

Licks and kisses, Your pal, Joey

QUILTING ANGELS CHARITY BEE

The Quilting Angels charity bee met this past Monday, and we were delighted to be able to donate 36 quilts to Freedom Place.  They sent a college student intern to meet with us and receive the quilts.  She told us a little about the organization.  It was sobering to hear about how young the victims of sex trafficking are, and how hard it is for those who are rescued to adjust to a safe environment.  We told her that we would like for the girls to be able to keep the quilts we sent.  We sincerely hope the quilts will bring comfort and warmth. Many thanks go to Neta Lee, who put in a lot of time and effort preparing the "Posies" block kits for the bee.  The block proved to be challenging, but ten or so people followed her instructions, and put together some pretty posies. They will eventually make a beautiful quilt! The Quilting Angels meet to sew quilts for charitable causes every other month, on the "odd" months.  The next time we will meet will be Monday, May 15.  However, on Monday, April 17, Pam Baum will host a charity machine quilting bee day.  If you would be willing to help machine quilt lap quilts and prayer shawls, bring your machine and basic sewing supplies and join her that day.  Pam suggests this would be a good project for those of you who have purchased a Sew Steady Table.  The Quilting Angels will provide the quilt tops, batting, and backing fabrics. If you would like to reach me, email Susan at charityquilts@quiltersemporium.com. Keep on sewing!  Making quilts for charity is truly a blessing! Susan

MILLION PILLOWCASE CHALLENGE

IT’S MARCH MADNESS!!!  Currently we have collected 149 pillowcases for this month!  Great job!!  At this point we will definitely be able to split the March donation with both of our hospices. Thanks everyone.

For those of you who don’t know Allpeoplequilts.com has issued an Ultimate Pillowcase Challenge.  The Challenge will take place throughout the month of March.  Points for the Challenge will be gathered not only for the number of pillowcases made but additional points will be given to the participants by submitting pictures as we work on the pillowcases.  They can be pictures of individuals and/or our team(s).  This week I posted a picture of Sue Kirby-Webb, one of our volunteers.  Sue was kind enough to have someone snap a picture of her working on pillowcases for March Madness and she sent it to me, so I posted it.  Please go http://woobox.com/9vcdbe/gallery/ipSs89Z7GPg and vote for QE & Sue’s photo.  Remember we get extra points when we submit photos.  If you have a picture that I can submit of you or your group making pillowcase please email them to me at charityquilts@quiltersemporium.com.  I assume any pictures we submit could possibly be put on the Allpeoplequilt.com website.

The drawer at QE is full of pillowcase kits!!  You guys are giving Barbara and me a run for money, but it hasn’t been easy.  What a wonderful problem to have!  You keep sewing, we will keep cutting.   For those of you who don’t know, QE keeps pillowcase kits available for anyone to pick up, take home and sew.  All we ask is that the completed pillowcases are returned to QE so that we can donate them to Houston and Silverado Hospices for their patients.

Save the date for Friday, September 15 and Saturday, September 16 for our 24-Hour Pillowcase Sew-A-Thon.  This has become an annual event at QE in conjunction with Allpeoplequilts.com.  More information will be provided as we get closer to the event.  Mark those calendars and join us for the fun.

As of Wednesday, evening the National count is 712,141. March Madness going to allow us to donate to both Houston and Silverado Hospices in March.  THANK YOU for all of your hard work!

QE can be in the top three!

Happy Sewing!

Karen
