MARCH

CUSTOMER APPRECIATION DAY - March 17 (Prize drawings start at 3pm)

Going on a Cruise!

I'm so excited!  Pat and I are leaving on Sunday, Feb 18 with the other shop owners in the Greater Houston Shop Hop.  It is the first time that all of us have collaborated on a quilting retreat and it's on a cruise ship!  Woo-hoo!  And guess what?  We are doing it again next year!  Our dates are set for March 3-10 of 2019.  So if you couldn't make it to this years cruise...why not check out next years sailing!

Mystery Club notes from Pam...

Mystery quilt #12 has finally been revealed, and our quilters are busy putting the finishing touches on their quilts for viewing in the shop next month.  In the meantime, we are signing up for Mystery Quilt #13 which kicks off on Saturday, February 24th at either 9:00 a.m. OR 11:30 a.m.  For our new series, we have two options for sizes that will be appropriate for all skill levels.  We are also excited to be able to offer instructions for using Studio 180 rulers such as the Tucker Trimmer, V-Block, and Square Squared, so that quilters who have attended Tucker University can try out their new skills in a supervised setting.  Fabric requirements are available at the shop, so come by and have our staff register you for the next session starting the last Saturday in February, while they assist you in making selections for your next Mystery quilt.

 Notes from Joey...

Uh oh... Mama is packing bags and boxes at home... Papa is packing too.  This can't be good!  They keep talking about getting on a ship.  I wonder if I can fit in her suitcase?  What do you think?

I'm still kinda little even though Dr. Sally said I gained almost a whole pound since last year!  I think it is my winter haircut.  That will weigh a pound, right?  And toenails count too.  She didn't cut my toenails.  I feel better about that extra pound now.  Toenails, longer hair...ooh and I was wearing a sweater too!  Yep... I probably didn't gain anything at all.   Whew!

Licks
and kisses, Joey

CHARITY QUILTS

The Quilting Angels will meet on Monday February 19 to make fidget quilts for Reliable Oaks in Needville.  We will sew from 10:00 to 3:00.  A fidget quilt is an activity lap quilt that provides sensory and tactile stimulation for the restless hands of someone with Alzheimer’s and/or dementia.  All you need to bring is your sewing machine and basic sewing supplies.  Our friend, Zoe has all of the materials we will need.  She will bring examples to inspire us.  If you only want to do hand work, there will be buttons and other tactile items to sew on. Also, the quilts are tied with embroidery thread, and we will need volunteers to do that.

We will meet to sew quilt tops again on Monday March 19.  Currently, we are making quilts for Arms Wide Adoption Agency.

A special thank you to Jetta, who donated a roll of batting.  What a generous donation!  Thank you also to Norine, who has volunteered to help with longarming quilts.  What a gracious offer!

If you would like to get ahold of me, you can email Susan at charityquilts@quiltersemporium.com.

Friends are like fabric - you can never have enough.  So join us on the 19th, and make some new friends while helping others.

Susan

MILLION PILLOWCASE CHALLENGE...

I hope everyone enjoyed the exchange of emails from our Hospice volunteers.  I have been out of town the last three weeks, so I haven’t had a chance to make our January delivery to Silverado.  I will make the delivery when I get back home next week.

Barbara has been doing a great job of keeping the drawer at QE stocked with pillowcase kits in my absence.  She tells me the drawer has lots of kits, please feel free to grab a kit or two when you are in the shop.  Our kits are free, we just ask that you return the finished pillowcases to QE for our Hospices.

As of Wednesday evening, the National pillowcase count is 759, 453.  Thanks for your continued support!

Saturday Sampler News

We have a great group of ladies attending our Saturday Sampler meetings and we thank you for coming every month!  It's a lot of fun, don't you think?

Many of them have already purchased setting kits which is helpful and those are being prepared.  But something came to light this week that puts a fire under us to get orders for setting kits and quilt backings, particularly for the Modern Antiques quilt.

Benartex Modern Antiques fabric is being phased out at the manufacturer.  We are able to get the fabric now, but when the line runs out at their warehouse, we will be out of luck, no more reprints!  At our next Saturday Sampler meeting, we will be taking orders for setting kits and backing.  Please understand that if you don't place your order this weekend, we will not be able to guarantee your fabric choice!  I will need to place my final orders for this fabric collection soon, to insure that it will be earmarked for us.

We will also take orders for setting kits and backing fabrics for the batik and bright colorways!  Be sure to attend - there may be surprises as well!

February's class is based around the Wing Clipper ruler.  We will make lots of flying geese that come out perfectly, with the help of Studio 180's great product and instructions.  All our points will be exactly where they belong, with quarter inch seam allowances to ensure excellent block-making!  We will also work on the technique sheet "Pickets and Quickets", which will allow us to make a variety of flying goose-related units that are often seen in blocks.  If you have made blocks from previous Tucker University classes, bring them in for show-and-tell - Pam will be giving out Customer Appreciation coupons!

You will learn the best way to cut the fabric, and how to press to keep your blocks square. We will be making the traditional day and night block, and will review the many ways to lay out this block.
