Mystery Quilt #12 got underway in July, but we still have a few slots available.  Only three fabrics are used, but this quilt has an interesting finish you won’t want to miss.  Contact the shop if you are interested, and we can get you started and ready for the next meeting on Saturday, August 26th.  We extended each session to 2 hours.  New times are 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. OR 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  To wrap up Mystery #11, look for Viewer’s Choice voting which starts this week.  Drop by and vote for your favorite completed quilt top from Mystery #11.  Don’t hesitate, they will not be around for long.  Our winner will receive a prize of a $25 Quilter’s Emporium gift certificate. Good luck!

The first letter to our cruise guests will be emailed out next week to the email address that you gave to Al Magee.  It is jam packed with great information that all attendees will want to know!

Here are some details that you need to know about the February 2018 Quilting Cruise!

1)  All participants need to sign up through Cruises by Al Magee - no exceptions (713-729-3040).  There is an "upcharge" to the Royal Caribbean prices on the Royal Caribbean website.  This upcharge pays for all of your cruise classes, contests and challenges, demos, trunk shows, lectures, goodie bags, prizes, etc.

2)  The cruise class catalog is emailed to only to those who have signed up for the cruise) on September 1. Classes are filled on a first come-first served basis.  If none of  your chosen classes require a sewing machine, then you don't need to bring one.  If any of your classes requires a sewing machine, you DO need to bring one. Any good working sewing machine with a reliable 1/4" stitch will work great.  So if you have a travel sized machine that you take to classes, this is what you want to bring.  You may want to bring it in a rolling case so you can get it back and forth from your cabin to the Conference Room (located Deck 2 - FORWARD).
There will be a few machines available for rent at $30 per class session (3 hours).

3)  Once you send in your class requests in September, and you are enrolled in the class of your choice, then you will pay for any class kits that are required.  The cruise fee does not include your class kits.  It is unfair to expect a student to pay the same amount if they are taking nothing but lectures, demos, etc, than someone who is taking classes that require large quilt kits.  So once you are accepted in your chosen classes, you are charged for those kits.

4)  All class kits will be prepared as much as possible, including pre-cutting fabric so that all you need to do is sit down and sew.  Exception - if part of the instruction of this class includes preparation/cutting the fabric for the project, then the project will be prepared as much as possible to get you to the point to start the class.  Class kits will be delivered to you at the beginning of each class.

If you have any questions about the cruise, please email me at  I'm happy to help you!

 Notes from Joey...

YAP YAP!!  I am the calendar puppy for the 2017 SPCA Calendar for the month of August!  This is the picture that is in the calendar.

We are celebrating by giving you a free ticket for the Customer Appeciation Day in February/March when you mention my name when you check out at the register.  (One ticket per day).

Just a sweet reminder to you to keep an eye out in parking lots for animals locked in cars...but most importantly, no children locked in cars either!

Licks and kisses, your pal, Joey!

The Quilting Angles are an informal group of ladies who like to sew and like to help people in the community.  We make quilts and other things from fabric that bring comfort to others.  Our next quilting bee will be on Monday, September 18.  We generally make twin sized quilts, as that tends to be the size requested by most organizations.  Anyone who wants to join us is welcome to come.

We have decided on a fun and easy project for October, which is breast cancer awareness month.  On Monday, October 16, we will be making heart shaped pillows for breast cancer patients who have had reconstruction.  The shape of the top of the pillow is just right for....well, you can figure it out.  One of our own, who is a breast cancer survivor, will deliver the pillows to M.D. Anderson Cancer Hospital.

Thank you to the people who have donated fabric in the last couple of weeks.  It is always appreciated.  All of our projects are made with donated fabrics.  Thank you for the monetary donations at the register a well.  Your donations keep us stocked with batting.  If you would like to get in touch with me, you can email Susan at

Friends are like fabric - you can never have enough!

We are a little more than a month away from the 24-Hour Pillowcase Sew-A-Thon.  Preparations are coming along well.  We have 275 kits stashed for the Sew-A-Thon.   Thank you to Darlene Patin and Mary Wright for volunteering to pin the kits.  Having the kits pinned will give us a head start on our sewing. Maybe we can beat last year’s 310 pillowcases that we made.

The 24-Hour Pillowcase Sew-A-Thon is a national event.  QE is one of many shops participating across the country to make as many pillowcases as possible in 24 hours.  This will be the third year, QE will be participating.  Our Sew-A-Thon begins on Friday, September 15, 9:00 AM and will run until Saturday, September 16, 9:00 AM. This is a come and go event. Some people have just joined us for a little while when they have stopped in to shop; others have spent a part of their day and a few have actually stayed the full 24 hours.  Just because the event takes place for 24 hours doesn’t mean that anyone must commit for the full time.  We would welcome any amount of help you are willing to offer.  There are lots of thing for people to do.  We need people to pin, sew, cut and iron.  (Lots of ironing!)  The day is full of good company, good food and door prizes while doing something nice for someone else.  Please watch this newsletter as we get closer to the event for more information.  If you haven’t marked you calendars yet for this year’s 24-Hour Pillowcase Sew-A-Thon, please do.  If you are ready to commit, please RSVP to Quilter’s Emporium.

With all the kits we are making to prepare for the Sew-A-Thon and keep the drawer full our fabric stash is getting low.  If you are cleaning out or would like to buy an extra yard or two of fabric we would greatly appreciate your donations.  The body of a pillowcase takes 27” by the width of fabric and the tops are 10” by width of fabric.  If you have fabric to donate you can drop it off at QE and tell them it is for the Pillowcase Challenge.  Thank you in advance.

It has been a while since I reported how we are doing on our donations.  At this point in 2017 we have donated 748 pillowcases.  Making a grand total of 11,475 pillowcases since we started in 2010.  What a wonderful accomplishment.  Best of all we are still going strong!  Just think of all the smiles we have put on people’s faces.  Great job everyone!

As of Wednesday the drawer at QE is full of kits.  Kits are free to anyone who is willing to make pillowcases.  All we ask is that you return the finished pillowcase to QE to donate to our Hospices. The National count is 733,668.  Our August delivery will go to Silverado Hospice.

Thanks!   Karen & Barbara
